The year is 1976 and standing in the dock before the Prague Court are The Plastic People of the Universe, a rock band that has attracted enormous public interest. The playwright Václav Havel, along with the leader of the underground, Ivan Martin Jirous, come to the conclusion that if freedom does not apply to everyone, it applies to no-one. This gives birth to the principles of the declaration later to become known as Charter 77.
